How to Remove Common Stains

Stains happen to everyone, but knowing how to tackle them can save your favorite garments. Here's a comprehensive guide to removing the most common stains:
Coffee and Tea Stains
For fresh stains, immediately rinse with cold water from the back of the fabric. For dried stains, soak in a solution of water, liquid laundry detergent, and a small amount of white vinegar for 15 minutes before washing.
Red Wine
Blot (don't rub) with a clean cloth, then cover with salt to absorb the liquid. After a few minutes, rinse with cold water and apply a stain remover before washing.
Grease and Oil
Apply dish soap directly to the stain and gently rub in. Let sit for 5–10 minutes, then wash in the hottest water safe for the fabric.
Ink
Dab with rubbing alcohol using a cotton ball, working from the outside of the stain toward the center. Rinse thoroughly and wash.
Blood
Immediately rinse with cold water (never hot, as it will set the stain). Apply hydrogen peroxide or an enzymatic stain remover, then wash in cold water.
Remember: The key to successful stain removal is acting quickly. The longer a stain sits, the harder it becomes to remove.
